Fay Putnam
Mezzo Soprano
Fay Putnam, Mezzo-soprano, looks to her work with the Gregg Smith Singers as the genesis of her continuing dedication to the contemporary repertoire. A graduate of Ithaca College, Ms. Putnam has also studied at Peabody Conservatory, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Westminster Choir College, and Virginia Commonwealth University. She founded the vocal quartet Cantabile, which performed at Colonial Williamsburg for 11 seasons and The Dominion Trio, comprising mezzo-soprano, clarinet, and piano which specializes in performing music of the 20th Century.
As a professional chorister she has performed under the direction of such conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Edo De Waart, Sarah Caldwell, Vance George, Dennis Keene as well as the world premier of Igor Stravinsky's Requiem Canticles under the direction of Robert Craft. Solo performances include, most recently, Messiah with the Napa Valley Symphony and Canteloube's Chants Auvergne with the Virginia Beach Symphony. Past performances cover a wide spectrum of styles, from the Stravinsky Mass, Michael Tilson Thomas, conducting to the Theresienmesse and Lord Nelson Mass of Haydn, under Dennis Keene. In May of 1998, she was heard as soloist with the Virginia Symphony in Mendelssohn's A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, under the direction of JoAnn Falletta. She has been heard as a recitalist on both coasts of the United States as well as in Europe at the Petite Theatre de Liege, Belgium, a concert which was recorded for Belgian National Radio. While singing with the Gregg Smith Singers she has appeared as soloist on National Tour as well as in Italy, VI Festival Corale Internazionale, and for 8 seasons at the Adirondack Festival of American Music, Meet the Composer Art Song Recitals.
Recently relocating to Portland, Oregon Fay maintains a private voice studio in her home. She is a AMSat certified Alexander Technique Teacher.
